The Art of Getting ReTweeted

We have talked about using Twitter Trends to generate traffic to your website and today we’re going to talk about getting your posts ReTweeted so you can get the maximum reach and traffic to your website.

A guy by the name of Dan Zarrella has recently completed some research around what sort of wording gets ReTweeted the most so today I’m going to share with you how to become “ReTweetable”.

What is a ReTweet?

For those of you who are unsure what I’m talking about when I say “ReTweet” it is when someone on twitter likes what you have written or said and decides they want to share it with their Twitter network by saying RT @<twitter username>: message. So for example if someone was to ReTweet this post it would look like “RT @SSMMarketing The Art of Getting ReTweeted http://bit.ly/AZnln” so as you can see people that aren’t following me will be able to click on the link and read our blog post.

How do I get ReTweeted?

Now when it comes to getting ReTweeted there are a few things you need to make sure that you do for it to happen:

  1. ReTweetYou need to make it as easy as possible to get ReTweeted. Now on our SSM Marketing site up the top of every post we do there is a button that people can click on that allows them to ReTweet this post to their followers. The easier it is for someone to ReTweet you the more it will happen.
  2. Make sure that what you write about is worthy of a ReTweet. People won’t ReTweet your posts and content to their followers if what you are writing doesn’t make sense or is just made up, so to ensure you have every chance of being ReTweeted make sure your content is of a high standard.

Is it okay to ask to be ReTweeted?

Now this is where a lot of people will either agree or disagree with me. I always get asked on Twitter if I could ReTweet something for someone to help them get their content to my network. A lot of people believe that asking someone to ReTweet you isn’t “proper” Twitter etiquette, but personally I disagree. I think asking someone to ReTweet you isn’t a bad thing, all you are doing is asking, there’s no pressure for them to have to ReTweet you if they don’t want to.

Did you know that if in your Twitter update if you include something like “Please RT” you are more likely to be ReTweeted than if you don’t? It just goes to show that people are willing to RT you if you ask them to.

One Last Tip

If you are going to use a URL shortener to shorten your URL’s for your tweets make sure that you use bit.ly. It is one of the most trusted shorteners around and is also proven to be more ReTweeted the any other shortener.

Now if you have enjoyed this post and want to share it with your Facebook friends or Twitter friends we would be deeply appreciative if you could use either the Facebook or Twitter sharing buttons at the top of this post :)
